Day 3: 25 Reasons to Give $25 to the Women’s Law Project

Friday, November 20 marks Carol Tracy’s 25th anniversary as Executive Director of the Women’s Law Project. We’re celebrating all week by posting 25 reasons to be grateful for Carol and the Women’s Law Project, and inviting you to celebrate with us by supporting this important work. Contributing to the Women’s Law Project is an investment in a better future for women and girls.

Today’s 5 Reasons to Give $25

11. The WLP fights for working mothers. Thanks to the Women’s Law Project and our allies, nursing workers in Philadelphia are entitled to private, sanitary space to express breast milk.

12. Our 2003 report, Justice in the Domestic Relations Division of Philadelphia Family Court: A Report to the Community, ignited advocacy efforts for the new family court building, which opened this year.

 

13. Though perhaps not as high-profile as our other litigation and public policy advocacy, the Women’s Law Project runs our own Telephone Counseling & Referral Service, which has provided information and counseling to untold numbers of victims of domestic violence and sexual assault for decades. This is a vital resource in a city with low literacy rates and the highest rate of deep poverty, where 90% of women enter family court without legal representation.

 

14. In 2001, the WLP represented plaintiffs before the Supreme Court of the United States and successfully argued women do not lose their privacy right by virtue of becoming pregnant in response to discovering women on Medical Assistance in Ferguson, South Carolina were secretly drug-tested at hospitals and in some cases subsequently arrested.

 

15. Years before marriage equality was realized, the Women’s Law Project worked to make second-parent adoption a reality for same-sex couples with children in Pennsylvania. Our nine-year campaign led to a 2002 victory in PA Supreme Court that held these adoptions permissible under Pennsylvania’s Adoption Act.
