Presidential Medal of Freedom Winners Announced

Last week, the White House announced the 2009 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a civilian. This year’s honorees include some names near and dear to those of us who fight for women’s and LGBT rights:

– Sandra Day O’Connor, the first female justice on the U.S. Supreme Court

– Billie Jean King, award-winning tennis player, Title IX advocate, and one of the first openly gay athletes in the U.S.

– Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official from a major city in the U.S.

We are pleased to see the White House honoring the contributions of these individuals. You can read the whole list of honorees here.
